Barack Obama is Not Your Messiah
*Disclaimer* This is not a political post, it doesn’t take stance with any political issues and isn’t at all intended to be partisan toward democrats or republicans.
Like a lot of people, I sincerely hope that the most powerful man in the world-elect is a good president, because that’s what America needs. However, I have a very realistic concept of how much one person (and his team) can fix, despite the power they may have. I’ve met an extraordinary number of people who seem to think that his election to the presidency is on par with the second coming of Christ if you believe in that…this isn’t a religious post either, and that we will all be ’saved’ by his presence in the oval office.I hate to break it to you, but the last administration proved that it is much easier to muck things up than to fix them. Regardless of political standing, this country has more problems now than it did 8 years ago. The metaphor that I like to use is that of a little kid who can throw a fit, and completely trash his bedroom in 15 minutes (or less). Then the mother (or father for you politically correct fools) has to come in and may spend hours cleaning the place up and getting everything back to the way it was. This is the equivalent of the Bush vs. Obama administrations. There is no way, that in 4 years, they will be able to undo all that is wrong with the country today. The media has made this man out to be the solution, painting the picture that we will live in a Utopian society when it’s all said and done. No one can live up to that hype, not even Barack Obama.
So my bitching is this: Stop setting yourself up for disappointment. Be happy (if you’re a Barack fan) with the fact that we’re at least shifting power to a man that completes sentences most of the time. Don’t tell me that I’m a pessimistic moron for not thinking that all of my problems are magically going to vanish in 4 years. Do not tell me I am “Un-American” for writing this entry, I stand by my country despite its shortcomings at the moment, but our current President-Elect is not the only missing link in the chain.-Nick

You’ve pretty much hit the nail on the head. But I will say that great strides will be made if our new President leads and makes sure that the best minds are consulted before decisions are made. From my observations, the outgoing resident of the Oval Office was manipulated by people with less-than-honorable motives.
There are a lot of problems faced by the new administration. If they are able to only begin making positive changes, the first term of President Obama will be a success.

i agree. too much hope in one man. if he can get people to take personal responsibility then that’s a better chance of turning america around. one man cant do it, but he seems like he has everyone fired up to try.

I totally agree! I’m glad we have made the progress we have made in this country, I’m hoping for some change in the way things have been done, but I’m also realistic about how much one person/administration can do. I also don’t expect to wake up Wednesday morning to a new world full of peace and harmony.

may be obama can make positive change for USA
thank for visiting my blog. nice to meet youJanuary 19th, 2009 at 9:54 pm -
Damn, I am afraid that I have to agree as well, and I really didn’t want to as I wanted to add some spice to the comments, but I would be a liar if I had said otherwise. I reckon that way too many people are pinning way too much hope on the efforts of one man, regardless of his team. This can only result in disappointment and a modicum of bitterness against the efforts of a man who has taken on one hell of a job, something that I am sure he is aware of.

Great bitch session:
While I am personally very excited about this country’s change in regime, I’m afraid that I too must agree that the soon to be president is NOT the messiah. So many people are looking for Obama to be a panacea for all their problems. The USA is in for a tough time in overcoming all of its economic woes and the first thing that I would suggest to people is that we need to start doing things for ourselves.T

I agree. I think Obama will be a good president, but we needed “good” a long time ago. At this point, we’d really need a miracle to fix everything in four years, and it’s not realistic to expect Obama to live up to that. We can only hope he does the best he can. I wish him luck.

It does seem like a lot of people are pinning way too much hope on this one guy. He is only human.

I find it interesting in all a lot of the blog posts I’ve seen since his election, a laundry list of things people want him to do starting day one.
If they think he (and he alone) can do everything right NOW, they are setting themselves up for a major disappointment. It took eight years to get into this mess (and it wasnt ALL Bush), it wont take eight days to get out of it.

I think what’s going to happen is that the hope bubble is going to burst, and people will be pissed off that all their problems weren’t solved by the summer of 2009. (We are Americans, after all. Patience is not our greatest virtue.) But if we can move beyond that, people in this country might actually grow up a little and stop with the “I get to do whatever I want” mentality that has hurt us so much since the 1980s.

The greater your expectations the more likely you will be disappointed. I think people are expecting too much from one man - he is after all a politician - they will be disappointed and turn on him.
It took more than 6 months to get into this swamp of a mess so I don’t know why people expect it to be magically fixed that fast.

The mess created by the old administration is something that CAN’T be fixed in 4 years (or maybe 8). However, one thing is certain, Obama presents a whole new world of HOPE and hope is what we all need in this trying times.

Very very true. I think that this country has very unrealistic expectations. Sure, Obama had a great platform… “Change”. But really, he isn’t going to achieve much of what he had planned. Their is no magic band-aid that he can use to fix the country.
…It will be interesting to see public opinion drop when everyone figures out that Obama is only a man. lol. I too wish him the best, but as you say, he is not the Messiah.
